What is a button mushroom?
The button mushroom is a highly popular and well-loved edible mushroom, belonging to the Agaricaceae family. It is easily recognizable by its smooth cap, which is usually white or light brown, and its firm yet tender flesh.
In cooking, it is prized for its subtle, slightly earthy flavor. When raw, it is enjoyed in salads or marinated, while cooked, it is versatile for many dishes, such as sautés, sauces, and gratins. Its delicate texture and mild taste make the button mushroom an excellent ingredient to enhance dishes without overpowering other flavors.
Where and when is the button mushroom harvested?
Originally from Europe, the button mushroom is now cultivated on a large scale, especially in the Netherlands, where it is harvested under carefully controlled conditions to preserve its quality and flavor. Unlike many wild mushrooms, the button mushroom grows in beds or mushroom farms, allowing for continuous and stable production throughout the year.
Available almost year-round, it reaches its peak production between October and November, a time when its flavor and texture are most appreciated.
